Hi there! Welcome to Ken’s Study Journey! Today, I am going to share my study journey during the 2020 China National Day.

During the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, I went to Meizhou and Chaozhou, in which I could explore the scenery and cultures and enjoy local food.

Meizhou and Chaozhou are 2 cities in Guangdong Province, China. During the epidemic, we didn't want to go to other places outside Guangdong for safety reasons.

By the way, I discovered some knowledge while traveling for a number of subjects, such as math, chemistry, and economics.

Also, I had programming lessons during the first 2 days of the holiday. I studied some useful Python programming language knowledge.

Today, I am going to talk about the journey in Meizhou and Chaozhou during the China National Day. Let's get started!

Overview

This trip has 4 parts. I had Python programming lessons firstly. Then I went to Qingyuan, Meizhou, and Chaozhou respectively.

Both Meizhou and Chaozhou contain historical and traditional things, so I can learn about the history and cultures in different areas.

Also, I successfully enjoyed some authentic local food such as beef ball (牛肉丸) in Chaozhou and Pork with Salted Vegetable (梅菜扣肉) in Meizhou.

Day 1 and 2: Python programming lessons

I firstly had some Python programming lessons on October 1 and 2.

In the morning, I went to a café to do my homework and/or update my website. This is because my brother has a robot lesson in the same place.

Then, I had programming lessons in the afternoon. I enjoyed writing codes and making computer games.

After class, I went back home by underground because there was congestion on many roads in Guangzhou city center.

Day 2: Mediterranean restaurant in Canton Tower

On the second day evening, however, we went to the Mediterranean restaurant (106th Floor) in Canton Tower to enjoy the food worldwide and the night scenery in Guangzhou city center.

Note: For safety reasons, we need to wear masks while getting food at the side of the restaurant.

Day 3: Qingyuan

On October 3, we went to Qingyuan with our family because we have a home there. Also, we went to the hot spring to raise our spirit and strengthen our body in the sales center beside our home.

Internet access is now available there, so I can do my homework and chat with my friends more easily than before. Therefore, there is no need to do my homework and/or my own tasks while traveling during the next few days.

Last year (2019), I went to London Town to enjoy the United Kingdom again after I came back from the United Kingdom summer camp.

Day 4 and 5: Meizhou

Day 4: Hakka Town

The journey starts on the fourth day during the festival, when we can explore the things outside my familiar regions (e. g. Guangzhou, the city I live in). So, we can enjoy food, culture, and scenery in new places that I never been to before.

We firstly went to Hakka Town to enjoy the Hakka ancient culture. By the way, we ate the local food - Pickled Surface (腌面) - inside the town.

In the evening, we went to see the performance in front of a stage on the mountain, where I can learn how did people work in ancient times.

And then, we lived in the hotel just there in a villa on the mountain, where we can see the local scenery while living.

Day 5: Baihou Ancient Town

All right! Next, move on to the Baihou Ancient Town, where we can see the historical things and learn local cultures.

There are some ancient houses, a theater, and some pavilions. Also, we could see the performances by local people like the performance yesterday evening in the theater.

Day 6 and 7: Chaozhou

In the last 2 days of the trip, we went to Chaozhou, which is a city adjacent to Meizhou.

We can enjoy the authentic food, beef ball (牛肉丸) and beef hotpot (牛肉火锅), which are my favorite.

Unfortunately, we could have enjoyed the Chaozhou Ancient Town and Guangjimen Building because of the car-parking issue. There were so many people enjoying these two places in the evening. However, I just took some photos of the night scenery there.

We lived in the Hampton by Hilton Hotel which is comfortable and friendly. Then, our journey was coming to the end and we went to Guangzhou immediately after breakfast.

Knowledge I discovered

By the way, I have discovered and used some knowledge I have just learned in my school, GCGS, during this trip for a number of subjects, such as math, physics, chemistry, and economics.

I say: "School has holidays, but study doesn't have". This is because we still need to study even if it is a holiday. Also, studying is an unstoppable process.

Mathematics knowledge: Gradient

While I was climbing the mountain in Hakka Town, Meizhou, I discovered a math knowledge - gradient. The gradient of the mountain is very high, so it is very difficult to climb.

Here is the picture in my mind (and excellent student's mind):

Math Knowledge with High Gradient in Student's Mind

Physics knowledge: Acceleration

In the first 2 days of the holidays, I was experiencing the acceleration.

The cars always start and stop repeatedly because of the congestion in the city center. So, I experienced the acceleration and deceleration.

Also, when I was in the elevator in the Canton Tower, I experienced this while it is moving upwards or downwards.

Formula: a = (v - v0) / t

Chemistry knowledge: Movement of particles

I smelt the flavor when the food arrives while having a meal. This is because the particles always move, collide, and slide over each other, especially liquids and gases.

Economics knowledge: Opportunity cost

I need to make the best choice when there are many things I want and I cannot obtain all of them. Different things have different benefits.

Opportunity cost means the best alternative forgone in economics. If I give a choice, I need to abandon all other things so I will lose the benefits of other things.

For example, listening to English audios can practice my English listening skills, but remembering English words can gain my vocabulary. I need to choose one of them on a 15-minute journey bus. If I choose to listen to audios instead of remembering words, I will lose some vocabulary, so the vocabulary I will not remember is the opportunity cost.

Therefore, I need to make considerations according to the circumstances, such as my spirit, the temperature, the light, the size of the space, and the volume of other sounds.

My study plan

I kept studying as I travel, doing my study tasks such as finishing homework and remembering English words, listening to English audios, and discovering knowledge I have just learned in my school in real life.

I took my unfinished homework on October 3, when I left Guangzhou. So, I can finish them in the hotel in the evening and I can have fun and relax in the morning and afternoon.

When I am in the car, I usually listen to English audios such as TED Talks and Podcasts. Also, I remember English words using my own vocabulary cards in my free time.

Inspirations from this trip

Not only did I discover much knowledge while traveling, but also I got some inspirations during this trip, which positively impact my feelings and life.

I discovered that the staff at the Hampton hotel were very friendly and nice. They are glad to help customers.

For example, they welcome us to live in by giving some free beverages when we sit in front of the front desk.

Also, they follow us as we go after asking for a direction inside the hotel (e. g. elevator and restaurant).

It is similar to some staff at Heathrow Airport, London, UK. I discovered this last year during my United Kingdom summer camp. Some helpful staff wears a special uniform with a help icon and a text: “Here to Help”.

So, I began to help actively and treat people friendly in need since September 2019. This is the inspiration I got from the trip.

Conclusion

This article talked about my journey during China National Day in Guangzhou, Qingyuan, Meizhou and Chaozhou. It benefited me a lot because I studied while traveling.

I hope you can gain more knowledge and improve your life while traveling in the future. Also, we should use knowledge learned in the school in real life.
